On the run again, he traveled around Northern Europe.

He built a house deep in the woods of southwestern Ireland. While tending crops one summer morning, he daydreamed of an idyllic place free from persecution.

A bitter wind blew down from a glacier, and it was snowing.

His feet told him he had not moved, but his eyes showed him a snow-covered meadow.

He thought of home and was instantly back in his warm summer garden.

For an instant, he convinced himself it was all a dream, except for the melting snow on his boots.

A few days later, he carelessly thought of his lab back in Prussia, and instantly, he was there.

The new alchemist stooped over from long years working at his lab bench, shouted, “How did you get in here?”

He couldn’t answer.

“Who are you?”

“No one. I’m really sorry.” He backed toward the door. “I’m leaving.”

The man grabbed his sleeve. “Not until you tell me how you got past that locked door.”

Tobias tried to break free, but the man held fast until a large lab assistant pinned his arms behind him. Within a minute, the burly young man had tied him to his old chair.

Tobias tried leaving the way he came, but something was wrong.

“How did you get in here?” said the alchemist.

“I don’t know.”

The assistant grabbed Tobias by the collar and said, “Answer him.”

“I did.”

The man slapped Tobias across the face. “Talk!”

“I can’t tell you what I don’t know.”

The man raised his hand again.

“Don’t.”

The assistant hesitated briefly. He laughed and balled up his massive fist.

The chest pains flared again and ended.

The assistant grunted, staggered, and folded to the floor.

“Not again,” Tobias mumbled to himself.

“You killed him,” said the alchemist. He grabbed a huge knife and headed toward Tobias.

“Wait. He’s breathing.”

The alchemist put his old hand on the young man’s chest.

Tobias used those few seconds to clear his mind. He thought of his kitchen, pictured his favorite chair, and...

He was home.
